Sona Jobarteh Receives Honorary PHD Doctorate from Berklee College of Music
On April 4th 2023 Sona Jobarteh was awarded an honorary PHD Doctorate in Music from the premier institute of music and the performing arts Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. Sona Jobarteh was officially hooded by the president of Berklee Dr. Erica Muhl president at her inauguration ceremony. Dr Muhl delivered a powerful speech honouring Dr. Jobarteh's work and career, saying "Sona embodies our best aspirations as a community. Consummate artistry, innovative composition, stellar production, original scholarship, humanitarian activism, mastery and expansion of great musical traditions. Not to mention a ground-breaking, world changing career."

I am not black and I dont even quite know why I have felt such such deep, almost familiar feelings for African cultures...(so many many cultures) but I have all my life. Watching many of them, tribal cultures revered for untold generations losing their identities is not only heart-breaking to me but seems incredibly short-sighted . Africa IS the birthplace of mankind. Like it or not, it has been proven. Tribal cultures are varied and rich with heritage. Their customs, resources, family structures, manner of dress, means of survival...is fascinating and beautiful to me. EVERY African contributes to that rich tapestry. Sona is a leader fighting for the cultural pride of all Africans! I am in awe of her in countless ways. I am so angry at the outrage of colonialism and its disgusting footprints. I feel as though its impact slashed through Africa, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. The arrogance of the powerful.
